Hail Damage Repair in Show Low, AZ: A Monsoon Season Guide

Published June 19th, 2026 by Unknown

Most people think of Arizona as a sunny, dry, low-weather state, and at lower elevations that’s usually accurate. But the White Mountains operate on a different calendar. Up here, monsoon season runs roughly from mid-June through September, bringing afternoon thunderstorms that can drop heavy rain, gusty winds, and, on a regular basis, hail.

For drivers in Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, and the surrounding communities, hail damage is one of the most common reasons vehicles end up in a body shop during the summer. With monsoon season approaching, it’s a good time to understand what hail actually does to a vehicle, what repair options exist, and how to handle the insurance side of things if your car gets caught in the wrong storm.

Why Show Low Sees Hail Damage Most Years

Show Low sits at over 6,300 feet of elevation, and the surrounding White Mountains region rises higher still. That elevation, combined with the moisture pulled up from the south during monsoon, creates ideal conditions for the kind of strong convective storms that produce hail. Most years, the region sees several hail events between June and September. Some are minor, with pea-sized hail that bounces off without doing real damage. Others produce hail the size of marbles, golf balls, or larger, which can dent metal, crack glass, and ruin paint in a matter of minutes.

The challenge is that hail doesn’t announce itself with much warning. A storm can move in over the course of an hour, drop damaging hail for five to ten minutes, and move on, leaving every uncovered vehicle in the area dented. There’s often no time to move the car to shelter once the hail starts.

What Hail Actually Does to a Vehicle

Hail damage isn’t one type of damage. It’s several distinct problems, often happening at the same time:

Surface Dents

The most visible damage is dents on horizontal surfaces: the hood, roof, trunk, and tops of fenders. Depending on the size of the hail and the duration of the storm, dents can range from small dimples that are only visible at certain angles to deeper craters that distort the panel shape.

Paint and Clear Coat Damage

Larger hailstones don’t just dent metal, they can chip or crack the clear coat and even break through to the base paint. Once the protective layers are compromised, the underlying metal is exposed to moisture and UV, which leads to corrosion if not addressed.

Glass Damage

Windshields and rear windows can crack or shatter from larger hail. Sunroof glass is particularly vulnerable. Side mirrors are often broken in significant hailstorms.

Trim and Plastic Components

Light covers, antenna mounts, plastic trim pieces, and vent fins on the hood can all crack under direct hail strikes. These often get overlooked in a quick visual inspection but show up in a thorough assessment.

Paintless Dent Repair vs. Conventional Repair

Most hail damage falls into one of two repair categories: paintless dent repair, or conventional repair that involves filler, paint, or panel replacement.

Paintless dent repair, often called PDR, is a specialized process where technicians use precision tools to massage dents out from behind the panel, restoring the original shape without affecting the factory paint. PDR is the preferred approach for hail damage when:

  • The paint and clear coat are intact
  • The dents are accessible from behind the panel
  • The metal hasn’t been stretched or creased too sharply

The advantage of PDR is significant: it preserves the factory paint, which is generally more durable and color-stable than any aftermarket refinish. It’s also faster and less expensive in most cases.

Conventional repair becomes necessary when the paint is compromised, when dents are too deep or sharp for PDR, or when panels need to be replaced entirely. In those cases, the affected areas go through the full paint and refinishing process, which includes color matching, blending, and clear coat application to ensure the repaired area is indistinguishable from the rest of the vehicle.

A quality shop will assess each panel individually and recommend the right approach for each one, sometimes mixing PDR and conventional repair on the same vehicle.

Insurance and Hail Damage

Hail damage is typically covered under comprehensive insurance, the same coverage that handles wildlife collisions, theft, and weather-related damage. As with other comprehensive claims, hail damage usually doesn’t affect your rates the way an at-fault collision claim might, and the deductible is often lower.

However, you have to actually have comprehensive coverage. Liability-only or basic collision policies generally won’t cover hail damage. If you live in an area where hail is a regular occurrence, comprehensive coverage is worth carrying for this reason alone.

The team at Heck’s Collision Center provides insurance claim assistance as part of the standard service, including direct coordination with major carriers to streamline the process.

Why Acting Quickly Matters

After a hail event, there’s a temptation to wait, especially if the damage looks cosmetic. But there are good reasons not to put off repair:

  • Compromised clear coat allows moisture to reach the metal, which leads to corrosion that’s much harder to fix later
  • Insurance claims have time limits, and waiting too long can complicate the process
  • If the next storm causes additional damage before the first claim is filed, sorting out which damage came from which event becomes a hassle
  • Major hail events sometimes overwhelm local repair capacity, and shops can book out for weeks

The sooner damage is documented and a repair plan is in place, the smoother the process tends to go.

Preventing Hail Damage When Possible

Some practical steps that help during monsoon season:

  • Keep your vehicle in a garage or under a carport when possible, especially during afternoons in July and August
  • Pay attention to weather alerts, particularly severe thunderstorm warnings
  • Have a plan for where to move your vehicle if you have advance warning
  • Confirm your insurance policy includes comprehensive coverage before monsoon season starts
